Are You Ready For Snow?

Are you ready? You are never fully ready for continuous snow but you don't worry or fret about it, you deal with it. Thursday we received 12" of fresh snow, Saturday we received 17" of new snow and today so far we have received 2" of new snow. Our weather forecast tells us that it is suppose to snow heavier as the day wears on and through tomorrow night. So far that is 31" of new snow and most likely today and tomorrow will provide an equal amount. Therefore I will post this now because for the next week I will be pretty busy with a snow shovel. It is over belly deep for the dogs in the back yard and the dogs clearly don't like that aspect. The top photo depicts how it comes off the roof of our home and piles up. All that has to be shoveled as the snow thrower can not reach those area's. The deck, wood shed, walkway, garage, vehicles, and snow thrower all have to be shoveled out. Therefore I will publish this blog now as I know what I'll be doing for the next several days.

Our annual average snow fall is around 264" and according to my rough calculations so far this winter we have received 103" and still have the next couple days to get through before we have a break in the weather. The road crew does not work on weekends so our road will not be plowed until possibly late tomorrow. More than likely late Tuesday because they also don't plow during a storm.

So if you want to join us as neighbors, this is what you can expect. Last year we only received 180" of snow all winter. Looks like we are making up for that deficit this year. Let the fun begin!!

Oh, my goodness, Bruce and Carol…. I don’t know how you deal with all of this in such good humor! I’d be whining and crying and making plane reservations for Florida! It sure is beautiful though, and I’ll bet it’s peaceful with the silent snowfall… It’s hard for us town people to imagine the quiet… I don’t think it’s ever totally quiet around here. We still hear road noise and someone is always mowing or blowing leaves or trimming something – there’s always the whine of some sort of power equipment, and that really gets old. I’d like to “hear” silence once…

Oh, my! I have not been on much lately and am only now checking my emails and sighing. I miss reading your and Carol's good words, but I see you may be too busy to write much for awhile, either! WOW! And this is just the beginning of the season. Maybe it is coming in with a bang and will go out with a whimper! :) Happy shoveling. Beautiful pictures as always! :)

It can be daunting - I just came in from shoveling out from the side of the house. Probably 4-5' deep under the eves. Seemed like a ton of snow one shovel at a time. Actually probably only half a ton just seemed like more. Got it way out from the side of the house where I can get it with the snow thrower. Temp's are dropping so it may be a while before the snow thrower warms up enough to start. No sweat, have headlights. Still coming down pretty hard so need to get that snow thrower going...

So, so jealous...

WOW! That snow is beautiful! I bet it's not as beautiful when you are shoveling it, though. I think our dogs Buster and Abby would love to play in it. Gus and Hobbit not so much. Do you dogs enjoy the snow when it's not too deep for them?

Amy: No need to be jealous. Just came in from clearing the drive with the snow thrower. 14 degrees, wind blowing 90 to nothing, snow coming out of the trees and couldn't see where I was going. You don't want to be jealous over that. My jeans were wet and frozen. Had to clear the snow now because it was 2' deep and that is all my snow thrower can handle. When we get the next two feet tomorrow I'll have to start all over again. We sure have enough snow now to sled in though...I love it...

Dog Mom: Our dogs love it except when it is 11 degrees and the wind is blowing like it is now. Then they like the house real well. They do like to play in it though and have a ball with each other. We got 4' at one time once and I forced the back door open and they ran out in that loose fluffy snow and totally disappeared. I could see the snow move as they ran out into the yard and then their heads popped up, they took a bearing on the back door and headed right into the house. Had to shovel an area for them to go potty. They refused to go out until I cleared an area for them. Funny for sure. Lucky for us we have large dogs, if they were small we may have had a hard time finding them...

Curious Bruce.........why does one choose to live in an area like this when one is heading or is in their senior years? Aren't we suppose to move south to warmer climates rather than risk a heart attack from shoveling tons of snow? I know it's beautiful looking living in the wilderness, but my oh my what added work to one's already tiring "limbs!" As I said, just curious! Barbara

That is a good question Barbara. I think living like we do is probably more healthy than if we lived in the city. Shoveling, splitting firewood by hand, and all the other things we do are healthy living. Add our pure air, pure and delicious well water and that is good living. Granted at 70 most people would not think they would be doing this. The beauty of where we live, the healthy environment and yes the tiring limbs but it is all worth it. Our wood stove is cranking out great heat, so we are warm.
We know that there will be a day when we can no longer cope but for the moment we enjoy and love it. I recall helping a group of volunteers winterize a 92 y/o woman's house. She still cut and split her firewood with an axe. I ask her how she was so healthy and she said it was due to keeping active, living healthy and she planned to hang around for a lot more years. I thought she had a lesson that was worthy of putting into use. When I look around at other 70 y/o men I see old men but I feel like a 40 y/o. Wish I could give you a better answer but that is the best I can do..
