Wood Carver

A little known fact about Carol is that her hobby is carving wood. With her volunteer work she has little time if any for carving anymore. Besides her studio is not heated and carving in the house with 4 dogs that want to be nosing her work is somewhat hazardous. As you can see by the photo's she is really a good carver. She is also an old fashioned carver since she only uses knives and not any power equipment to carve.

These are some of her carving projects from the past. One time on New Years Eve she was carving as we watched the festivities on TV and she cut her hand. We spent the evening at the ER getting stitches. She had her carvings on display at a museum/consignment in Lancaster, PA and some thief broke into the locked case and stole her items. She has attended school with master carvers in the Adirondacks.

I'm somewhat biased but I believe she does a very good job. Perhaps one day she will find the time to do some more carving.

Very Nice,,,, We have a wood carvers convention here at North ranch in a couple months. It is a really popular hobby. Lots of people from all over the country attend, It lasts a week and there is a campground right next to the activities center........
Nice job Carol....

She most certainly does a wonderful job--I treasure the chickadee I have of hers--love the bird but love the carver even more! I truly miss having time to do something creative anymore. Work sure sucks the life out of me--when I get home, I have energy to read and not much more. Oh, well.

Wow! Those are really amazing. I've always had the desire to carve wood. I've been held back because I just don't know how to get started and I don't want to hurt myself. Does Carol have any tips for beginners? :)

Jesse, back in the day, Bruce bought me a wood carvers kit from http://www.woodcarvers.com/birdkits.htm (the black capped chickadee since we had a bunch of those hanging around our house in Tallahassee) and some carving tools similar to these http://www.woodcarvers.com/kn300.htm. One of the best things you can purchase in addition to a blank and the knives is one of these gloves http://www.woodcarvers.com/Gloves.htm....or have a lot of band aids near bye! Happy carving!!

Carol, you're awesome! Those are wonderful and extremely helpful links...I'm so excited. Its exactly what I need but what I've been unable to find in my local craft stores. Once I get all this Christmas-gift knitting complete, I will give it a try! :)
