New Bathroom Door - Another Tree To Project Item

New bathroom door with cut glass oval with hummingbird etched into it. Corners are rounded off to give it a professional appearance and self closing door hinges. The light at the top so we can tell when the bathroom is occupied. It went from a lightning struck tree about 35' from our back door to a door. Need a couple pieces of hardware and it will be done. What fun going from a tree to a door. Don't think many can say that. Door is a little over one inch thick and swings perfectly. We used to have an opening on the old door thinking it would allow heat to circulate into the bathroom. WRONG....so now we have a solid wood door with a light at the top to make it more private and functional. Still need to make molding to go around it... Pleased with the outcome...Tree to door - woo hoo....

As a new home owner in FP, I enjoy reading your tree-to-object posts. Out of curiosity, do you have to dry the wood at any point in the process to prevent future issues (bowing/warping), or is that not an issue due to the downed-tree source?

Welcome to the neighborhood David. I let the wood air dry and briefly commented on that aspect in my other article in Mother Earth News. http://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/tree-to-table-zbcz1312.aspx

I only cut dead standing trees and they are pretty dry already if they aren't to old. So it takes no time to dry lumber by simply using the air dry method. I have some wood I have milled several years old that has no warp or wind. Dead standing makes really beautiful lumber. Hope that answers your question.

Comment by Sakoieta: Excellent. work. That’s the same way I grew up. If we couldn’t make it or trade someone for it then as a last resort we would buy it. :)

Comment by Raylene: What a beauty! I grew up appreciating such ingenuity with a father who could make some amazing things out of what others saw as nothing worth keeping…I do believe my son inherited that ability which he must now use to figure out how to get to the asteroids to explore them…….can you believe?!
