You Never Know

When we looked out the back door this morning this is what we saw. One doe bedded down right next to where we cook cowboy breakfast. Two others just grazing on the new green vegetation. We never know what we will see when we go outside. I believe she is still laying there as I write this.

How do they know by instinct which is a safe place? Our ducks do the same... Even the Wood Ducks have this year decided it's safe to come up on the bank for corn... this is the first year for this. The mallards and geese sold out years ago and actually come at a dead run when they hear my voice. My voice = corn. The Wood Ducks, however, are still skittish and run / swim away when they see or hear a human, but even to get them to come up on the bank for food is a triumph to us.

I sure don't know except I seem to sense which animals are friendly or safe also. We had a bear come down the mountain and then just sit down from about 25 yards away and watch us work on cutting firewood. Other incidents with bears have been the same. Not so much with mountain lions they are more 'keep out of my safety zone' types. Had a bear walk right past me in the driveway not a foot away and I knew and it obviously knew it was no threat. In all our bear encounters we have only had one bear that said keep your distance and when we did all was okay.

I miss the bears I used to see when I lived in North Carolina, but I don't miss them raiding the bird feeder and trying to get into the trash cans. I think there is something about a deer that makes people stop and look at them with wonder.

I agree Gypsy. Maybe it is the warm and simultaneous curious look they have when you look into their eyes.
