Pack Rat - Day Two

What I failed to mention yesterday is that pack rats have an IQ some where above Einstein.  This morning the smell is far worse and they evaded the live trap and the cracker with peanut butter placed in the trap.  They have finished off my flowers along with the buds that won't bloom now.  Time to get serious, I am not happy that they like to toy with me.  Persistence and perseverance will trump a high IQ any day.  I have plenty of snap traps so it the rat returns tonight it will be like walking through a mine field to get to the last vestige of my flowers.  I guess I should be content that I was able to enjoy them for a short while anyway.

You know how I feel about snakes… I feel the same about rats… Go get ‘em Bruce --- and don’t bring ‘em back alive…

I have an electronic rat zapper if you are not successful. I think this rat may belong to Mary Wilson. Sue has fallen down laughing on the floor and I'm typing to get her back on her feet again.

Each September we have packrats visit our cabin. I know when Ms. Packrat has returned by her harvesting techniques. Like you flowers, I'll find a few removed and strategically placed around the cabin deck. The other telltale sign is her poop in the chaise pad. It's as if she is sitting there at night surveying her domain. We use live traps to try and relocate them. One year we gave up after 15. As one would leave, another would move into the territory. They use on shed to store their harvesting bounty for winter use. I have to clean it out several time, but by late fall we both sort of give up. I've never had them chew anything other than my plants though. - Margy

The smell of pack rats is terrible too. They pee on everything and it is very hard to was away because the smell seems to permeate.
