Hi Bruce,

I recently purchased a lot in FP and want to visit in the spring to plant a spring/summer garden.

When does the snow clear on the southern facing meadows in the spring?

When are the roads clear for a car to drive?

I want to visit first part of april, is this too early?

Anonymous: I'm not sure I can adequately answer that question for you. I have done prior blogs on my garden here in Forbes Park but it is in enclosed garden boxes to keep the varmits our. This winter has been unusual and far from normal. Guessing as to when you can put in a garden is just a guess. I would say that April 1st might be too early. It is usually toward the end of May when I get to work the soil and plant. Often I start my seedlings inside. If your lot is open and gets a lot of sun it may be free of snow earlier than ours. My off hand opinion is that April 1, is pushing it somewhat.

I noted that you asked when the roads are good to drive a car on. That too depends on where your lot is located. The assocaition has its own rules and equipment so you need to check on the website for accurate and current rules. These roads are in the mountains and are well maintained but a four wheel drive is very helpful but not always essential. The roads are dirt roads so are subject to constant weather impact. ie: Rain and melting snow can cause mud. Wind can cause snow drifting and it does snow here through May. I suggest you might want to check with the road advisory committee as to road conditions prior to your coming to the park. Weather and conditions are sometimes quich and unpredictable and where your lot is located can be a definite factor.
There are really no definitive answers to your questions but I hope this helps somewhat.

Hi Bruce,

Thank you for that information. I will likely delay the visit until end of april but keep my eye on the weather to see if this years warmth and lower snow level allows earlier access.

This is a great blog, the friend of forbes park blog is wonderful as well but very political for good reason I suppose.

I enjoy seeing your pictures and reading your stories, keep them coming!!
