Bilberry

Bilberry looks like blueberries or huckleberries.  Actually it has some medicinal benefits and grows in Europe. Here is what WebMD has to say about it.  "Bilberry is also used for treating eye conditions such as cataracts and disorders of the retina. There is some evidence that bilberry may help retinal disorders".

It was suggested by a writer on the SARDS article I wrote for Mother Earth News.  After reading up on it on line it had several articles suggesting the benefits from taking it. The lady that wrote  advised me about the benefits it gave her Welch Corgie. Her dog has sight problems and by giving it bilberry and antibotics the dog's sight improved noticeably. We are hoping it will do the same for Sarah since her problem is her retinas. If this works for her (which the vets say there is no hope for or any cure) I will post the results here.

Hi,
What (Bilberry) dosage did you give your pet? And what antibiotics and dosage did you give to see results please?
Please respond ASAP. We are desperately trying to help our pup.
Thank you.

Sherlyn: I don't recall the dosage but when I found out about it I drove directly to Walmart and found it in the natural supplements section by the pharmacy section. I gave her one capsule per day. The vet we used then did not give her any antibiotics as she said it wouldn't help. It was about two weeks into the bilberry that she suddenly could see again. Our vet couldn't explain it nor did the specialist in Colorado Springs. Neither attributed it to the bilberry but have no explanation for what happened. I hope this info will help you and that your pup will have sight restored. We learned about it within 4-5 days from when she suddenly went blind. I think starting early is key. Our vet said it is attributed to high blood pressure in dogs but they really don't know much about it due to its rareness.

I am wondering about the dosage, too. Walmart has anywhere from 100 mg (with blueberry included) to 1200 mg. Quite a range. Does anyone have info on dosage? I will begin with the lowest.

Anonymous: Maybe do a test using the 100 mg at one per day to see if there is any change. I would definitely ask your vet what they suggest is the proper dosage.
