I decided to snow shoe down to the swing to see if I could shovel it out. The snow covered the swing but I followed the chains down and voila - there was the swing. The photo shows me standing on 4' of snow, and it took a while to shovel out the swing. The snow to the swing was 4-6' deep but it had a crust that held me up. If I would have broken through it would be difficult to get myself out again.
Because of the ash that is combined with the snow the top crust is about 6" thick and under that is several feet of wet soft snow. It could easily be July before I can get down there without the snow shoes. On nice days we can now go to the swing on snow shoes and have a cup of tea and enjoy the absolute silence.
