Sherlyn: I replied on the bilberry post but just so you don't miss it here is the reply: I don't recall the dosage but when I found out about it I drove directly to Walmart and found it in the natural supplements section by the pharmacy section. I gave her one capsule per day. The vet we used then did not give her any antibiotics as she said it wouldn't help. It was about two weeks into the bilberry that she suddenly could see again. Our vet couldn't explain it nor did the specialist in Colorado Springs. Neither attributed it to the bilberry but have no explanation for what happened. I hope this info will help you and that your pup will have sight restored. We learned about bilberry within 4-5 days from when she suddenly went blind. I think starting early is key. Our vet said it is attributed to high blood pressure in dogs but they really don't know much about it due to its rareness.

I remember the panic in both us and Sarah when it happened. I wish you the same good luck with your dog as we had with Sarah. We did not give her any other supplements and the vet didn't prescribe anything except prednisone which was a low dose. Sarah passed away from old age and heart failure two years ago and had her sight until the very end. I don't know the dosage as Walmart only had one bottle of bilberry.

Thank you so much for your response. I am so sorry to hear about Sarah’s passing, but I am glad to hear that she did well until the end.
May I ask why the vet prescribed prednisone? Did the steroids have a role to play in the treatment of SARDS?
My pup has been on the Bilberry capsules for around a week and a half. I am still hopeful.
If you know of anything that will help my pup, please do let me know.
Thank you again for your response. I hope to hear back from you soon.

Hi again,
I’m not sure if I asked you the dosage if the Prednisone that Sarah was prescribed and how long you had her on it.
Hoping to hear from you soon.
Thank you kindly.

Sherlyn: I don't remember the dosage as it has been several years ago. I recall Walmart only had one bottle so no choice on dose but I gave her one capsule per day. The prednisone was just a guess on the vet's part as she didn't know if it would help or not. She got the prednisone for a few days - maybe 4-5 days and then she went on bilberry. After a couple weeks of bilberry she suddenly could see again.
for our vet prednisone is an all purpose go to Rx. It has side effects like having to go out to urinate frequently. As I'm sure you know making frequent trips outside with a blind dog is challenging which is why we took her off it after a few days. The vet didn't know if it would work or not anyway.

Sherlyn: my heart goes out to you - having gone through Sarah and her having SARD's. I know my heart was breaking for her when she developed it but because dogs pick up so keenly on our feelings I didn't want her to know how we felt for her. Because it is so sudden and unexpected we didn't sleep well listening for her to move in the night and possible hurt herself. We put oil of Rosemary on door openings so she would smell it and avoid running into a solid surface. We used foam tubes on table and chair legs so she wouldn't hurt herself and large bubble wrap on areas that she might run into until she could orient herself. The greatest problem was her disorientation. She would jump to get on the sofa and actually jump into the wood stove. Until they figure out where they are it is very hard. I hope you are as lucky and blessed as we were in getting site back. Even a little is a big help.
