Truth Or Error:

Our recent dog Klaus was advertised as a Belgium Shepherd (see photo below) but I could tell he was not anywhere near a Belgium Shepherd. I told the guy at the shelter he looked more like an Akita and Chow Chow mix. His stance, ears, body structure and the tail. The black tongue was also a dead give away. I was more interested in his temperament, personality and conduct than his ancestry.

He passed with aces on all the requirements I wanted but his breed clearly was not a Belgium Shepherd even though they insisted. If he needed any training I really wanted to know what breed he was as each breed has different requirements for training. As it turns out he doesn't need training and he is as near perfect as they come. Not everything you read on the internet is true and not everything that comes from an animal shelter is true either. It is good to do your own research.

What the shelter said his behavior was certainly was not breed specific for a Belgium Shepherd but consistent behavior for Chow Chow Akita mix. As it would turn out I have had a fear of Chow dogs since I was a little boy. My uncle bred and raised Chows and he would bring the puppies over for me to play with. When he would bring them over after they were adults they were terribly vicious and I could not get close to them. That was my impression of what a Chow behaved like.  Klaus is one of the most loving gentle boys I have known.
