Crime is quickly finding its way to our small community. The Walmart where we shop in town had a shooting in the parking lot. The grocery store where we shop had a holdup. We go to the service counter when we shop there so it makes it personal. Our area is a gated community and just a few weeks ago people were trespassing on private property to steal prime firewood. As recent as this week we had two separate cases of vandalism that will be costly. Last summer we had numerous break-ins and some with the people in the residence when they occurred. We have been spared from crime for as long as we have lived here but now it is at our doorstep.
I ordered a security system to be installed at our home. It has been installed today. It is a sophisticated system that gives us a layer of security. We never thought it would be necessary but it clearly is. I can only see it getting worse and it is more apparent to us than it would be for those living in a more populated area where they have been mostly desensitized to it, or it is not reported by the media. We even had someone unknown charge $604.00 to our account at the Coop where we have been members for 24 years.
I ask myself why is it just happening now? Has it been there all along and we just did not notice it? I think it has a lot to do with the politicians who have led us into inflation. Everything is going up in price from fuel to food. Those who were living on the edge and earning low wages or getting government assistance are in a real crisis now. I just read that food stamps will be cut back for those who can't afford to buy food to begin with.
Even if you can afford food there are shortages at the grocery store. These and other indicators reveal to me that it will probably get worse before it gets better. We live in the poorest county in the state and did not have a prior crime problem but with those items mentioned above I think we will notice it more here than in more populated areas where there are more jobs avail than people to fill them.
