When I was in my early teens we would use a coke bottle for target practice. We would take our .22 caliber single shot rifles to the abandoned gravel pit and use them for target practice. We would ride to the gravel pit on our bikes and use up a box of .22 ammunition. We didn't shoot at the bottle standing up but we would lay the bottle down on its side and shoot through the opening and knock the bottom out of the bottle.
We would pace off about 25-30 steps and take a prone position and shoot the bottles that way. When we consistently could hit the target we would then move back another 5-6 paces and so forth. I attribute that type of shooting practice to consistently qualifying as expert marksman in the US Air Force. I particularly liked the .45 pistol and the BAR long range rifle. Going to the range to qualify each year was enjoyable for me.
I don't recall the specific scoring method but scoring anywhere between 280 - 300, was expert and i was usually at the upper level of expert. I was used to shooting with iron sights so qualifying on the range was always enjoyable for me.
I have a funny story about going with a USAF buddy squirrel hunting one time and I will share that in another blog.
