We lived 26+ years remote in the mountains at 9,600' elevation. Our nearest neighbor was one mile away. We currently live in turbulent times where our supply chain could be cut off and communications could be disrupted. When I mention to people that they should be prepared them generally tell me if they need to learn a technique to live they will google it or search it on the internet.
But what do you do if the internet is not there? You turn to others for what you need to know and work together to provide for yourself. You learn to grow your own vegetables and how to preserve what you need. You share with others and learn how to can or dry food for the future. You learn how to repurpose and turn away from the disposable society and keep only what you need to survive.
I was born during WW2, and I clearly remember patches and repairs on my clothes and when something wore out or through like shoes, we would patch it. We didn't buy clothes because of the latest fashion but for durability. Our neighborhood had fruit trees in our yards and we would share with each other. If you grew something you grew enough to share with each other. Our back yard had a peach tree, but neighbors had apple, cherry, and walnut trees.
Being self sufficient isn't always about individual survival but working with others to survive. When we were somewhat isolated in S. Colorado we had to be more self reliant as we could be snowed in for days, or weeks. We kept supplies on hand for several weeks for just that occasion. If a neighbor needed help we could provide that help. I remember carrying firewood to those who ran out or letting others who needed it cut trees on our property so they could stay warm.
With so much uncertainty in the world today it is prudent to consider what may happen and how you could be prepared for it should we lose our way of life we are accustomed to. When things could go bad without notice it is best to be prepared and have a plan of action. You also need to be prepared to defend your family and yourself should the need arise. Being self sufficient should be a group effort. Certainly something to think about with all the uncertainty in the world at present.
