Echo has adapted to his cauda equina syndrome when playing with his favorite ball. He now plays with it in the dog bed where it can't get away from him so much. The vet tells us that he has the sore on his tail probably from a nerve that tingles and he then licks it much like an itch. He had licked it sore and when we would put wound spray on it he would lick it off.
We therefore put anti-bacterial ointment on it and then a gauze bandage and wrapped it all secure with vet wrap. Looks funny but he doesn't seem to pay it any attention any longer. His back legs are getting weaker in slow increments and the vet told us when the day comes that he can't get up it will be time for him to cross the rainbow bridge. He struggles some times but so far he is able to get up for which we are very grateful..
It is difficult to see him get slightly worse day by day but he is still able to live a full life and is happy life. Bozley was older but we thought he would outlast Echo but Bozley was taken suddenly last Monday by a major stroke. It was sudden and totally unexpected and he was assisted across the rainbow bridge within two hours from having the stroke. We are still in shock at how fast it was and he is missed deeply. Thank you for everyone who sent us condolences and comforting words. It is going to take us and Echo and Bozley a long time to get over his sudden loss.

Our late Molly had the same problem with her back legs. They would sink lower and lower after she got up. She did not like us to hold her up with a towel wrapped around her belly either. It got worse over her last year (2016/17) to the point that she only could eliminate laying on her side. It was heart wrenching but didn't make our decision less painful when we had to let her go. After that I did not want any dog anymore, but my husband could not stand the empty house and now we have given a chance to another rescue dog.
Caring for a senior dog is challenging but I am glad we had her that long. Enjoy your furry kids as long as they are there. Time is short.
