Homesteading With Canines:

We just returned from placing Taylor in a space at the cemetery where our other dogs ashes are buried. We only knew him for 6 weeks but in that time he left a lasting impression on us. Earlier I submitted a blog to Mother Earth News that will probably go live next week. In that blog I had a paragraph that told how I couldn't imagine life on a homestead without dogs. They not only look out for us living here remotely with bears, mountain lions, bobcats, lynx and such but that is only a small part of what they do for us.

Granted their senses are far more attuned to sights, sounds and smells than us humans but just by their presence they make us better people. Their unwavering loyalty teaches us to stick with relationships until our last breath. They live in the moment and not in the past which is a good lesson for us humans. Not to say we disregard our memories but dwelling in the past which we can't change or the future which hasn't happened yet is not realistic.

When they are happy - which is most of the time - they show it and they don't pretend or pay "lip service" to the fact that they love us. With dogs what you see is exactly what you get. They teach us about unconditional love. Something that does not come easy for most people. Like I say dog's make us better people and I can't imagine living remotely and homesteading like we do without dogs. In my humble opinion they make our life complete.
