One day my NCO brought a fresh 2nd Lt. to my post to observe me as I worked and tell him about my position there. I spent about an hour with him and he left to be assigned to Base Police Investigations. He apparently was good at his job because he progressed up the ranks rapidly.
A little over two years later he visited my post again but this time to offer me a new job. He had one of his three investigators transferring to another base and he wanted me to do criminal investigations. I met with my senior NCO and he told me this was a rare opportunity and I should seriously consider it. He would miss me but he felt being on the elite guard was holding me back from my full potential.
I took the job and two of my tutors were Marc Ford and Tony Barrios who were as good as they come. I also had some FBI schools and University training. I didn't realize it at the time but my entire thinking was being revised and changed. I learned to pay attention to detail even the most minute facts. It was a change that impacted my entire life and which I am forever grateful for.
In interacting with other people I still can pick out what a word or innuendo that sets my alert button flashing. It is a natural attribute of a good investigator that only some possess. It was why my success rate was in the mid 90% of all cases I worked. It has served me well all these subsequent years and gave me the ability to take what others would consider meaningless details to form a factual result.
Many investigators never get past the basics which is good enough but these two men and two FBI agents coupled with a sheriff and senior MSG Muir helped to use my natural curiosity to change my thought process that has greatly benefitted me my entire life. I would never had the successes I managed throughout my career had it not been for these men in my life. A debt I can never repay. It was a gift that was priceless and life changing.
