Childhood pet:

:

My first childhood pet was a chicken hen that I named Clarabelle.  She looked exactly like the one in the photo. We lived in the city and there were dogs and cats that ran loose so I worked very hard to keep her safe. I am not sure why but my parents would drive out to this farm and buy a chicken from the farmer. Perhaps because back then most of the grocery stores were neighborhood stores where people converted the front of their home to small groceries and lived in the rest of the house.

What ever the reason we had gone to the farm one day for a chicken and the farmer said he had some chicks and would I like one. I was quick to tell him yes and that was the first pet I owned. I kept her in the garage at night and let her run around in the back yard during the day.  She grew quickly and started to lay eggs. I would go out in the morning and if she had not laid me a fresh egg, she would get r done.

I would carry her around and when I put her down she would cluck and follow me. She was a great chicken and she gave me many fresh eggs. For those who have never had a fresh egg there is a vast difference between the eggs you get at the store and a warm  fresh egg. I wish we could have chickens here but the covenants forbid it. I have asked for a variance but was refused. There is nothing like a fresh egg.
