Our dog Echo was diagnosed by our vet as having pannus which is an eye disease that effects the clear outer layer of the eye. We were told that it happens to dogs that live at high elevation and have long noses especially German Shepherds. He was prescribed drops and told that he needed to wear sun goggles when outdoors.
He ultimately made progress and we don't know if he recovered or had been misdiagnosed but he did not like those goggles or the drops.
Our girl Sarah had SARDs - Sudden accidental retina detachment. Early that morning she was out chasing chipmunks in the morning and by midday she was totally blind. We took her immediately to the vet and the diagnosis was she would be blind and no dogs known had ever recovered any sight after their retinas detached
I wrote articles for Mother Earth Magazine and did an article on it. We had already gone through helping her orient herself with blindness; bubble wrap, putting specific odors at places so she would not bump into things etc. I then got a comment from a reader who said her dog had the same condition and a friend of hers suggested she give her bilberry. I left immedicably for Walmart and started giving her one capsule of bilberry a day and a couple weeks later we suddenly realized she could see again. We took her that day back to the vet who could not explain it but confirmed her retinas had reattached, but disregarded the idea bilberry had anything to do with it. It may not work with all dogs but it did for Sarah.
Some times we have to look outside the box. Sarah lived to 13.5 and died of congestive heart failure and could see all that time. Maybe the vet was right but I have my opinion as to Sarah's full recovery.
